The goal is to enhance teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills as participants collaborate to build the tallest structure that supports a marshmallow at the top using limited materials.
In the “Marshmallow challenge”, teams compete to build the tallest possible tower using spaghetti, string, tape, and a marshmallow. This exercise encourages creative thinking, effective communication, and collaborative strategic planning, as teams must work together under time constraints to construct a stable structure.
Divide participants into teams of 3-5 members. Distribute equal amounts of building materials to each team: 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow.
Explain the rules to the teams. They have 25 minutes to build the tallest free-standing structure possible. The structure must support a marshmallow on top for at least 10 seconds without collapsing. The structure cannot be anchored to the table, walls, or any other objects.
Allow teams to plan and build their structures. Remind them to test and adapt their designs as they go.
After the building time expires, measure each tower. The tower must still be standing with the marshmallow on top to qualify.
Declare the team with the tallest structure that supports the marshmallow for at least 10 seconds the winner.
Facilitate a group discussion to reflect on the exercise, focusing on what strategies worked, what challenges were encountered, and how the teams adapted to any difficulties.
• Encourage teams to sketch their ideas quickly before starting to build.
• Emphasize the importance of adapting and refining designs based on what works and what does not.
• Foster an environment where trial and error is encouraged, reinforcing that early failures can lead to later successes.
