The goal of Cultural Artifacts is to deepen participants' understanding of each other's backgrounds and cultural identities through shared personal items. This activity promotes diversity and inclusion by inviting participants to share stories about cultural or personal significance attached to various objects.
“Cultural Artifacts” involves each participant bringing a small item that holds cultural or personal significance to them. Participants will share the story behind their item, explaining its significance and how it relates to their identity or heritage.
Prior to the session, ask participants to bring a small object that represents something significant about their background, culture, or personal journey.
Gather participants in a circle to create an inclusive environment where everyone can see each other and the items shared.
One by one, participants introduce their artifact and share its story, including any cultural, personal, or emotional significance it holds.
After each participant shares, open the floor for a few minutes of questions or comments to encourage interaction and interest among the group.
Conclude with a reflection on the diversity of experiences and backgrounds represented in the room.
• Ensure that each participant has enough time to share without the session becoming too lengthy.
• Encourage respect and sensitivity towards all shared stories and items.
• You might consider photographing the items (with permission) to create a visual reminder of the session that participants can take away.
