The goal of "Story Stitch" is to encourage connection and creativity among participants as they collaboratively build a story. This activity helps break the ice by getting everyone to contribute creatively in a fun and inclusive manner.
“Story Stitch” involves participants adding to a story one sentence at a time. The story begins with a starter sentence provided by the facilitator and grows as each participant adds their own ideas, creating an unpredictable and often humorous narrative.
Gather participants in a circle to foster a sense of community and ensure everyone can hear the contributions.
Start the story with a compelling opening sentence to spark imagination. For example, "On a rainy afternoon, a mysterious box was delivered to my door..."
Each participant adds one sentence to the story in turn. Encourage them to build directly on the previous sentence, but to also take creative liberties as they see fit.
Continue around the circle at least twice or until the story reaches a natural conclusion.
Once the story is complete, discuss as a group what themes emerged, what surprises occurred, and how each participant approached their contribution to the story.
• Encourage participants to listen actively to ensure the story flows and makes sense based on previous additions.
• Remind participants that the goal is fun and creativity, not perfection.
• If time allows, you can start a second round with a new story starter to see how different the narratives can become.
